Dancemaking is the heart of Columbia’s internationally recognized Dance Center, where you’ll learn choreography, technique and improvisation across a wide range of styles. MDC has served Chicago’s communities for over 20 years under the leadership of Founder and Artistic Director Homer Hans Bryant. He founded the Bryant Ballet School and Company in 1990 to create a neoclassical ballet technique which integrates a diversity of dance styles and honors the richness of our varied multicultural heritage. The name of the school was officially changed to Chicago Multi-Cultural Dance Center in 1997. In 2008 he merged ballet and street dance to create Hiplet™, a new technique featuring hip hop dance in pointe shoes.
Chicago Human Rhythm Project builds community through American tap and contemporary percussive arts in world class, innovative performance, education and outreach programs. Percussive dance is one of the oldest forms of human expression and tap dance is America's contribution to the evolution of this ancient art. Chicago Human Rhythm Project celebrates the primal impulse to make rhythm and presents programs throughout the year that bring diverse individuals and communities together to share this common experience. CHRP presents four annual performance/education programs at venues around Chicago including The DuSable Museum of African American History, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Millennium Park, the historic Jazz Showcase, the Cindy Pritzker Theater and the Fine Arts Building ! CHRP's resident performance and education ensemble - BAM! - provides after school arts education classes at three elementary schools including St. Sabina, Paul Revere and Bronzeville Lighthouse. BAM! also performs its acclaimed lecture demonstration - We All Got Rhythm - throughout Chicago which has been seen by more than 60,000 school children over the last five years. We dance together - we create together - we are moving forward - together!
Founded in 2012, Ballet 5:8 a 501-(c)-3 nonprofit arts organization. With a growing roster of professional dancers and a repertoire of all-new classical and contemporary works, Ballet 5:8 performs in a variety of settings across Chicago and the U.S. in addition to teaching workshops and master classes. Ballet 5:8’s performances combine the athleticism and beauty of professional dance with a commitment to practical communication and understandability. This brings performances out of the abstract, elitism of some art forms and into the hearts and minds of everyday people.
