Name: Anandha Ray
Status: offline
Age: 0
Country: United States
State: California

About: An award-winning choreographer, Anandha is the Artistic Director of Moving Arts Dance, a small but mighty, internationally touring, contemporary dance company. Ray toured with several small modern dance companies before receiving her master’s degrees and ultimately founding Moving Arts Dance (1994). With an interest in continually exploring the absolutely new, Ray has utilized the company’s tours to do research into the stylistic trends of dance in Europe. Excited to find that the world of ballet is incorporating modern influences, Ray has enjoyed the convergence of these two styles in the creation of such performances as a contemporary and very haunting Giselle, a hilarious, Gothic-tinged version of Alice-in-Wonderland set in Wonderland today as Alice's granddaughter topples down the same rabbit's hole in Back to Wonderland, and a delightfully dark, Halloween inspired, environmental performance in which audiences tour a “wax museum” in which sculptures magically come to life –and even transform audience members into spidercreatures- in Night Visions. One her passions in the creation of these new works is to incorporate creative input from artistic partnerships with the dancers and her long-time artistic colleague Michael Lowe. "I am inspired by the continual development of new edges in dance. I love pushing every limitation to the point that the limitation becomes the element of change, inspiring fresh approaches to movement expression.” -2008

Dance Resume:

A Sampling of Classes Offered:

The Art of Expressive Performance: Dance is more than physical steps and athletic bravado. The art of dance is transformative, bringing to audiences an emotional journey. “Expressive Movement Processing” is a technique to learn both an ease in performance and a new approach to choreographing movements that are as emotionally evocative as they are physically intense.

Anatomy & Kinesiology for Dance Technique: To succeed in a career in dance these days, dancers must have great technique and have an inherent understanding of the line of ballet. Often, however, dancers who have not trained in ballet lack a basic understanding of what that means. Broken into easy-to-understand terms, Ray applies anatomy and kinesiology to the technique class, allowing dancers to understand technique from the inside out, and thus improve in any form of dance, at radically fast rates.

Non-Gender Partnering
: To pursue a degree or career in dance, even female dancers will be expected to be able to partner other dancers. Although one must be strong, it is not brute strength that creates a brilliant partner. With an understanding of physics and gravity, any dancer can become a masterful partner, lifting others with ease, and learning to be lifted without fear or hesitation.

Contemporary Dance Technique: Trained as a modern dancer, Ray has created a technique that, while based in modern, incorporates the line of ballet and blends the aesthetics of contemporary European modern dance. Movement initiation from the core, rather than distal instigation marks a significant departure into a renewed exploration of dance technique.

Contemporary Composition: Conveying choreographic skill without conveying aesthetic bias. Trends in Modern Dance and Contemporary Ballet are explored. Theme and variation is used to develop all-original movement vocabulary, while establishing an understanding of one’s sub-conscious movement motivations.

Expressive Movement Processing: Utilizing processes from dance therapy, authentic movement and improvisation Ray has created a form that helps choreographers unleash creative blocks, as well as developing mastery in the language of expressive movement. This class develops necessary movement skills for all actors and dancers.

Contemporary Trends in Modern Dance and Ballet:
This class provides students with a guided International “tour” of the world of contemporary choreographers and dance companies.
