Valium is the brand name for a group of drugs known as benzodiazepines, which are used for treating anxiety disorder, insomnia and muscle spasms. Valium (diazepam) was first introduced in 1960 by the Swiss pharmaceutical company Hoffmann-La Roche under the name of Apo-diazepam. In the 1960s and 1970s Valium became one of the most popular tranquillisers on the market: more than 200 million prescriptions were filled worldwide annually. In fact, Valium reached even further popularity in the late 1970s when it featured as a key plot device in Michael Crichton’s hugely successful novel The Terminal Man and its film adaptation starring George Segal.
